Alumni from the Class of 2006, Alice has carved out a unique path in tech that led her to Netflix, right in the heart of the entertainment industry. With a rich, international background, she embodies a passion for both artistic creation and the tech world!
Hi, Alice! We’re thrilled to have you with us today. Can you introduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Alice, I’m 36, and I’ve been living and working in Paris for the past two years. I was born in France but grew up in Asia—first in Hong Kong until I was 10, then in Shanghai for high school. I returned to France for my studies, but I’ve spent most of my career abroad, in cities like London, Amsterdam, and San Francisco.
Could you tell us about your current role?
I work at Netflix, and I recently transitioned into a new role. Until now, I was leading the product team, overseeing everything on the Netflix platform itself. My job covered the final steps after the pitching, writing, filming, and post-production stages, focusing on elements like subtitles, dubbing, synopses, clips, and cover images right before the content goes live. Now, I’ve joined the content team—the core of everything—where we create, commission, write, and produce content. This includes series, films, non-fiction (documentaries, reality shows, game shows), and acquisitions (buying the rights to movies).
What’s your specific role within the content team?
I’m in charge of operations. My work involves aligning workflows and processes while collaborating closely with the PR, marketing, and product teams. I’m also responsible for our IP strategy, particularly for books and video games, to explore potential adaptations. For example, if a publisher approaches us with a book, we assess it, and if there’s interest, we secure the rights to start development. I also support local production teams in identifying sought-after authors in specific genres to spark creative energy.
What’s it like working at Netflix?
I love it! The culture at Netflix is incredibly strong. Feedback is key, and there’s a lot of openness and transparency. It’s an amazing place that almost feels like prep school (laughs)—everyone is a master of their field yet incredibly humble. Netflix is also super international; the hub is in Amsterdam, and the office there is just stunning. I always look forward to visiting.
Any fun facts?
Oh, I have plenty (laughs)! Working at Netflix means I get invited to all the premieres and incredible events like Netflix France’s 10th anniversary, plus there are loads of amazing goodies! The decor is totally Netflix-branded, with items like Lupin’s chair, Netflix cushions, etc. And working in content, I even bump into some of the talent! I’ve run into Omar Sy in the elevator (laughs), and meet with writers and directors on different floors… it’s great being around people who genuinely love coming to the office.
What led you to your current role?
I’ve always aimed high in my studies. After high school, I loved literature, so I enrolled in a liberal arts prep program. But I quickly realized it was quite academic, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to Sciences Po or CELSA. That’s when a new opportunity emerged, allowing liberal arts students to bridge into business schools. This helped me develop my language skills and broaden my horizons—by the time I left LFS, I spoke four languages! I wanted real experience and to travel, so I took a gap year where I worked and even spent time on a study abroad program in Buenos Aires.
How did your first internship go?
I had a contact at Microsoft for my first internship, but during the interview, they told me I had no digital experience and couldn’t hire me. So, I decided to do a six-month digital internship in Shanghai and then went back to Microsoft. This time, they hired me, and things went very well! Fresh out of business school, I got hired and moved to the UK. Later, I worked for a major radio network in London, then Apple recruited me to work on Apple Music.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I’ve always had a bit of an unfulfilled creative side. I’ve always been an avid reader, but I’m not exactly the type to showcase my own art. So, I set my career path in a way that would allow me to work around artists. This became possible thanks to my experiences in music at Apple Music, cinema at Microsoft, and now in production at Netflix. I’m proud to have stayed on this creative path.
How has LFS contributed to your professional and personal success?
I received great career guidance there when I had no idea what I wanted to do. I loved how they connected guidance to both the world and France, and they offered excellent counseling during the final years of school. They really listened to us. I also had teachers I adored, especially in literature and English, who helped me develop my passions.
What’s your favorite memory of LFS?
I loved the atmosphere at LFS—the environment, the open-minded people who had traveled all over the world. It was such a diverse community, and I enjoyed being around people with that level of open-mindedness. I felt I belonged.
What success tips would you like to share?
First, don’t limit yourself to a mold. Believe in yourself and keep going. My path isn’t perfect, but I stayed true to myself and trusted myself.
I also want to send a message: you can succeed with a humanities background, you just have to seize the opportunities in front of you. Humanities have never held me back.
And lastly, I want to stress this: Always lend a hand to those you can help along the way, whether they need advice, want to apply somewhere, or need help with classes. The support we give each other in the years to come is crucial, and who knows—I might just run into some LFS alumni at Netflix one day! (laughs)
