We’re excited to introduce Nathalie Mottet, our new Head of the Primary School at the Yangpu campus. With her extensive international experience and passion for education, Nathalie shares her initial impressions and her vision for enriching our students’ learning journey.
How are your first days at Shanghai French School going?
My first days at LFS have been fantastic. I’ve been welcomed with such warmth, attention, and professionalism. I’m stepping into a campus where the teaching team is incredibly dedicated, and the classes are already full of exciting projects. It’s been great spending time with the team to get to know their individual approaches and their plans for the new school year. I’m also looking forward to meeting my German counterpart.
What were you doing before joining our school? Could you tell us a bit about your background?
Before joining LFS, I was the academic director at the French International School of Hong Kong for the primary school, and before that, I was a primary school director in Bordeaux, France. I thoroughly enjoyed both roles, even though they were quite different. I’ve also worked in schools around the world, and I’m excited to continue my international experience at the Shanghai French School!
How does Shanghai compare to other cities where you’ve lived?
I arrived in early August, so it’s still early to make a full comparison, but I’m already finding Shanghai and China to be quite captivating. I was immediately struck by the city’s charm and the friendliness of the Shanghainese; it’s genuinely uplifting. I love that I can walk and bike around easily, which allows me to explore beautiful neighborhoods like the green areas of Yangpu and the diverse downtown districts. I’m also enjoying discovering the local cuisine!
What drew you to work at LFS?
My interest in Chinese culture and my desire to learn and practice Mandarin were big factors; I’ll be diving into that very soon. Additionally, the opportunity to work at such a prestigious and ambitious school was very appealing. The values of LFS—excellence, diversity, and the well-being of students—align perfectly with my own approach as an educator.
What’s your favorite spot on campus so far?
I’m really impressed with the campus. The facilities are amazing and offer exceptional working conditions. The swimming pool and gym are particularly impressive, and I have a special fondness for the garden area.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra that inspires you?
(Laughs) Personally, I’m drawn to the mantra: “Be kind to yourself, be kind to others.”
There are many other quotes I like, but one that really resonates with me is by Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” I believe in taking that first step and daring to start new ventures.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies?
I love being in nature and enjoy walking, as well as anything related to gentle mobility, so I bike a lot. I try to use my bike for most of my daily travels, which is quite convenient in Shanghai! I also enjoy hiking. Yoga has been a part of my life for several years and helps me unwind. As soon as I arrived in Shanghai, one of my first tasks was to find a yoga center (laughs)!
What would you like to wish our students and families for the new school year?
I wish them a fantastic school year, full of joy and discovery, as well as knowledge and new connections. I believe that interactions and relationships are crucial for growth; students learn and develop alongside their peers, teachers, and the entire school community. It’s clear to me that everyone here is dedicated to the students’ growth and well-being. I also wish all our families many exciting projects and fulfillment!
